Restaurants & Dining Experiences

We have tried to incorporate as many of our favorite dining and drinking experience in to our celebrations, but we could not include all of them. So here are a few that we think are a must try when in the city. We have left the days open for exploring places for lunch, and please feel free to book dinner on Wednesday (4th) after the welcome drinks or Saturday (7th).

LA COCINA DE HUMO

Wood stoves, comales, clay vessels, and adobe walls make up the Smoke Kitchen — a place built to show a little of the culinary traditions, the seasonality of the land, and the gastronomic heritage of chef Thalía Barrios García's family, originally from San Mateo Yucutindoó, a community in the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca.

The ever-changing menu features comfort-food classics rooted in her hometown. Yellow mole with milpa green beans, ranch chicken, mole coloradito with pork, all cooked in front of you over open fire, in clay pots, on the comal. It is one of the most immersive and honest expressions of Oaxacan village cooking you will find anywhere in the city.

Reserve well in advance, seatings are small and fill quickly.

Private group experiences available.

COOKING CLASSES

For those who want to go further, the cooking classes offer a hands-on introduction to ancestral techniques and traditional recipes; mole, tamales, molcajete salsas, using the native corn varieties and local ingredients that define this kitchen. Classes run approximately two and a half hours and are an exceptional way to take a piece of Oaxaca home with you.

Book via the website.
